A walk-in chicken coop is one you stand up inside instead of crouching in front of. That changes the daily job more than any other feature: you clean, feed, catch a bird and check a nest box on your feet, with both hands free.
Ours are steel-framed mesh enclosures rather than timber houses, from $329 up to $819, and the largest gives you 286 sq ft with 6.5 feet of headroom at the ridge. Read the next section before you buy, because most walk-ins in this class are runs, not houses.
A walk-in is usually an enclosure, not a hen house
The PawHut 9.2 × 31.2 ft coop is the clearest case:
- 286 sq ft of footprint.
- A lockable 5.6-foot door.
- No nesting boxes or roosts in the specification at all.
- A fabric cover of 11 × 6.2 ft. About a quarter of the enclosure is roofed; the rest is open to the sky.
PawHut says outright that it can be used with wooden cages, which is their way of saying you supply the house and this supplies the space around it.
That is a perfectly normal way to keep a flock, a hen house inside a big secure run, but it is not a one-box solution, and the listing photographs don't make that obvious.
What we can and can't tell you
Headroom is the thing worth checking before you commit a corner of the yard. A walk-in you have to stoop in stops being a walk-in by about week three.
