A portable chicken coop is a coop small enough and light enough that moving it is a one-person job rather than a project. In practice that means a shorter frame, wheels at one end and a handle you can actually reach.
Each one shows the moving hardware its manufacturer actually states — the wheels, and the handle and ground clearance where those are given. Assembled weight and floor construction are the two that would settle a one-person move, and manufacturers in this category rarely put either in writing, so you will not find them on these listings. Tell us which coop you are weighing up and we will ask before you order.
Small chicken coops and small poultry coops
"Small" is doing two different jobs in this category and it is worth separating them before you buy.
- Small for the flock — a coop rated for a handful of birds rather than a dozen.
- Small for the yard — a footprint that fits down a side gate, along a fence line, or on the only flat patch you have.
A small poultry coop can be either, and the listings rarely say which. So we publish the footprint and the coop area separately from the bird rating, and where a maker gives us enough dimensions we show our own arithmetic beside theirs.
How to choose one
Work through three things, in this order:
- Length. A short coop fits down a side gate and along a fence line; a long one does not.
- Wheel diameter. Small wheels are fine on mown lawn and hard work on tussocks.
- Handle position. Two wheels at one end with a handle at the other is the layout that gives you leverage. Side handles mean you're lifting.
The wheels are the whole mechanism
Chicken coop wheels get treated as a trim detail in the listings and they are the part that decides whether the thing actually moves. Two fixed wheels at one end turn the coop into a wheelbarrow: you lift the far end and walk it. Four swivelling casters look more capable and are worse on grass, because they dig in rather than roll.
Diameter matters more than count. Where a manufacturer publishes it, we print it. Where they don't, there is nothing there to read — we would rather leave the gap than estimate a figure off a photograph. Ask us and we will get it from the maker before you order.
The filter people get wrong
Capacity. Hen counts in this category tend to be optimistic, so where a manufacturer publishes enough dimensions we show the square-foot arithmetic alongside the rating.
On one 96.5" coop, for instance, the published run area works out at two to three standard birds. That is the number we give you.
What portable doesn't mean
- It doesn't mean light. None of these manufacturers publishes an assembled weight, so we make no one-person claim on any of them.
- It doesn't mean carry-able.
- It doesn't mean tractor. A portable coop with a solid floor is still a coop on wheels.
