A coop listing's hen-capacity claim and the floor-space arithmetic answer two different questions, so they can hand you two very different numbers for the same coop. Divide a stated footprint by 12 square feet per standard hen — 4 of house plus 8 of run — and you have the confined number: how many hens the enclosure supports if the birds never leave it. A capacity claim can rest on a quite different assumption, and where a listing doesn't say which, its number is unverified rather than untrue. This guide gives you the arithmetic, the three assumptions that open the gap, and the one line to check on any listing before you trust its headline figure — starting with the coops we carry.

Chickens per square foot: where the 12 comes from
We used honest capacity math: take the listing's own stated footprint (length × width), and divide by 12 square feet per standard hen — 4 sq ft of house plus 8 sq ft of run, the figure our own size guide builds to. The published services sit either side of it: Penn State Extension puts a laying hen at 1.5 sq ft inside and 8 of run, Virginia Cooperative Extension at 3 to 4 inside and 10 of run, and University of Minnesota Extension at 3 to 5 inside. We use a figure in the middle deliberately, and say so, because the finding does not depend on picking the largest number. We call the result the confined number: how many hens the enclosure supports if the birds never leave it. Free-ranging all day changes the answer — more on that below, because it's the fairest explanation for the gap.
How many chickens fit in a coop? Work it from your own numbers
You need two figures off the listing and one decision about your own garden. The two figures are the stated length and width. The decision is how the flock will actually live: shut in, out on grass all day, or somewhere between. Find your row below and the division that applies to you is in the third column.

Two things send this wrong. One is reading a claimed range at its top end when your birds will be confined most of the year. The other is multiplying the whole structure's outline rather than the floor the birds can stand on, because nesting boxes, ramps and dead corners all sit inside that outline and none of them is floor. Where a listing won't give you two dimensions to multiply, the footprint still exists on the drawing the coop was built from, and asking for it before you order is the whole difference between a claim and a number. What a listing has to state before a capacity claim means anything
Four fields carry the whole question. Read them in this order on whatever you are weighing up and you will know inside a minute whether the headline number can be checked at all.

A worked case for the third row: an enclosure whose listing states 286 square feet of floor outright divides to 23 confined standard hens, against a headline claim of 30 to 40. Nothing there is dishonest, and the arithmetic took ten seconds precisely because the floor area was published rather than implied. Ask which question a capacity number answered before you order, and if the arithmetic is pushing you up a size, start from the large coops.
Why are capacity claims so much higher than the math?
Three assumptions do the work. First, all-day ranging: if hens only sleep and lay inside, the coop needs to cover roosting and nesting, not living space, and capacity genuinely rises — dividing a house floor by 4 square feet, instead of dividing house-plus-run by 12, triples the number of birds the same structure supports. Second, bantam arithmetic: Penn State Extension's Table 1 puts a bantam at 1 sq ft inside and 4 of run against a laying hen's 1.5 and 8 — roughly half the total — and some manufacturers quote the bantam figure without saying so. Third, footprint inflation: quoting the whole structure's outline as if every square foot were usable floor, when nesting boxes, ramps and dead corners eat into it.
How to check any coop listing in under a minute
Multiply the stated length by width in inches, divide by 144 for square feet, then divide by 12. That's the confined number. If you'll let the flock range from morning to dusk, divide the house floor alone by 4 instead. If the listing gives you nothing to multiply, treat the capacity claim as unverified and ask before you order.
What to do when the split isn't published
The house-to-run split decides whether the free-range division is available to you at all, and an overall footprint can be published without it. There is nothing sinister in that: one outside dimension is what a carton needs, while the internal measurements belong to the build drawing rather than to the advertisement. Whoever built the coop measured both.
So ask for both, and ask precisely: the house floor's length and width, separately from the run's. Three checks that catch most capacity trouble
First, check the claim's bottom end against your own confined number, not its top end. A range printed as two figures is a range for two different households, and the top of it belongs to the household whose birds are out on grass all day. If even the bottom of the range sits above your confined number, the claim and the arithmetic disagree under the friendliest reading available.
Second, check that you are comparing like with like. A wheeled coop and a walk-in enclosure take the same arithmetic but are bought for different reasons, so judge each one against others of its own kind before you judge it against the other kind. Compare mobile coops against each other and walk-ins against each other before you compare across the two.
Third, check what the footprint is measuring. An outline that takes in a nesting box bumped out from the wall, an external ramp or a sloping roofline is not the floor the birds stand on. Where a listing gives a usable floor area outright, use it; where it gives only an outline, read your answer as the generous end and buy accordingly. When two coops sit close on the arithmetic, let the one publishing a usable floor area take the decision, since its number is the one you can actually test.
A worked example you can copy
Take a listing that states 85.6 by 40.6 inches and claims six to eight hens. Multiply: 3,475 square inches. Divide by 144: 24.1 square feet. Divide by 12: two confined standard hens, a factor of three against the bottom of the claim. That gap proves nothing on its own until you know what the claim assumed, and here you can't, because no separate house floor is published — so the 4-square-foot free-range check isn't available and the confined number is the only one you can verify. Carry that into any listing anywhere as the one red flag worth memorising: no stated house-to-run split means the capacity number can't be checked. Ask for the split, then buy on arithmetic rather than on a headline; the coops with runs are where the question bites hardest.

How to buy on the arithmetic instead of the headline
Run the division before you fall for a listing, and shop a size up from the claim if your birds will be confined most days: buying space generously costs you a little, and buying it tight costs the flock. Compare within a category rather than across it — a mobile coop and a walk-in are answering different questions before either of them answers yours. What this method can't see
Honest capacity math is a floor-space test, and floor space isn't the whole of welfare. It doesn't count vertical space — a tall coop with generous roosts genuinely carries crowding better than a low one with the same footprint. It doesn't know your breed: on Penn State Extension's figures a bantam needs roughly half a laying hen's total space, so a claim that's optimistic for Orpingtons can be fair for Seramas. And it doesn't know your climate; flocks wintered indoors for weeks need more margin than flocks that range eleven months a year. Use the confined number as the strict baseline it is, then adjust in one direction only — up for confinement and big breeds, never down because the marketing says so.
