A coop plan is a specification, not a picture. Eight fields decide whether you can actually build from it: overall dimensions, a cut list, a materials list, coop floor area, ventilation area, pop-hole opening, wire spec and — if it moves — finished weight. Most free plans state three or four. We scored 20 real commercial coop listings against the same eight and they did no better: zero state a wire gauge, zero state an assembled weight. So this is how to read a plan before you spend a weekend on it, and where to start if you'd rather buy a flat-pack coop kit instead.

What should a chicken coop plan include?
Eight fields. A plan with all eight can be built by someone who has never built one; a plan missing four of them is a picture with a caption, and you'll be making the engineering decisions yourself at the lumber yard.

That last one only applies to portable builds, but it's the field with the highest consequence, because a heavy tractor doesn't get moved and a tractor that doesn't get moved is a shed.
Here's the uncomfortable part. We ran the same checklist across the coops we actually sell — commercial products with proper listings, photographs and spec sections — to see whether the industry does better than hobby plans.

Fifteen listings tell you how many hens fit. Five tell you how much floor there is. That gap — the confident capacity number floating above an unstated area — is the same failure mode as a plan with a hen count and no dimensions, and it's why the checklist is worth carrying into a shop as well as into a build.
How to read a coop plan before you cut anything
Read the whole sheet before the first cut, in this order: overall dimensions, then the cut list, then the elevations, then the details. Most build mistakes are made on paper and only discovered in wood.
Check the scale is stated, and ignore it anyway. A drawing scaled at 1:20 becomes something else the moment your printer decides to "fit to page". Use the written dimensions. If a plan expects you to measure off the drawing, that's the first warning.
Check nominal against actual. A nominal 2 × 4 measures about 1½ by 3½ inches once it's dressed. A cut list written in nominal sizes with lengths that assume actual sizes will be short at every joint. Good plans say which they mean.
Count the elevations. You want a plan view from above and at least two elevations, ideally with one section through the roosting area. One perspective sketch is a design, not a plan.
Look for how the roof meets the walls. That junction is where beginner builds leak, and it's the detail most free plans draw at the smallest scale on the sheet.
Add up the cut list and compare it to the lumber lengths you can actually buy. Boards come in standard lengths. A cut list that produces 40% offcut is either badly nested or written by someone who never bought the wood.
Free chicken coop plans vs paid plans: what the money actually buys
Usually a cut list and a materials list — which is worth something, but not much, because those are precisely the two things the best free plans also include. Paying is not a reliable filter for quality here.
What paid plans more often get right: nested cut lists that waste less lumber, a stated build sequence, and dimensions that have been checked by someone who actually built the thing. What they frequently get wrong, at exactly the same rate as free plans: ventilation area, pop-hole dimensions and wire specification.
The genuinely reliable free source is the one nobody links to. US extension services publish coop plans as part of their remit, and they are drawn by people who size a building against published bird-space figures rather than against a Pinterest board. Virginia Cooperative Extension, for one, publishes three layer-house designs, including an 8 ft × 8 ft house it states will hold 15 to 20 birds.
That last figure is worth pausing on. Divide 64 square feet by Virginia's own 3–4 sq ft per bird and you get 16 to 21 hens. Their plan and their space guidance agree. Very few plans anywhere are internally consistent like that, and checking whether a plan's stated capacity survives its own dimensions is the fastest quality test you can run in under a minute.

DIY chicken coop plans for beginners
Start under 25 square feet, single-slope roof, no floor joists longer than six feet. Every build gets harder at the same three points, and a small plan lets you meet those points once each rather than repeatedly.
Three build types suit a first attempt:
The A-frame. Two triangles and a ridge. No wall framing, no rafters, and the geometry braces itself. The trade-off is headroom, which is poor everywhere except the middle.
The raised box with a run underneath. A simple rectangle on legs. Easy to frame, easy to clean because you're not bending double, and it gives the birds shade under the coop. The legs need bracing or it will rack.
The hoop. A cattle panel bent over a timber base. Almost no cutting, very fast, and light enough to move. Weak in high wind unless the base is heavy or pinned.
What makes each of them beginner-friendly is the same thing: few cuts, no compound angles, and a roof that's one plane. What makes a build hard is not size — it's the number of different angles you have to hold true at once.

Sizing a plan to your flock
Work backwards from the birds. Multiply your flock by the coop floor area per hen, add the run, then draw the box — never the other way round.
Published guidance varies more than most plans admit. Penn State Extension publishes 1.5 sq ft of coop floor per laying hen and 2 sq ft for large chickens, with 8 to 10 sq ft of run. Virginia Cooperative Extension publishes 3 to 4 sq ft inside and 10 sq ft outside. University of Minnesota Extension publishes 3 to 5 sq ft inside.
Build to the middle-to-upper end — 3 to 4 sq ft per standard hen — and your plan will satisfy all three. Then size the fittings, which plans forget entirely: about six inches of roost per standard bird, and a nest box for every four or five hens at a minimum of 12 × 12 inches, set two feet off the ground and four feet away from the roosts.

Ventilation: the field most plans skip
Almost no plan states a vent area, and we can tell you why: no source we could open publishes one either. We read three extension housing guides looking for a square-inch figure per bird and found none. What they publish is qualitative — Penn State advises "ample air movement without a draft", Virginia notes that "windows or vents on one side of the house usually provide plenty of ventilation for small coops".
That's honest guidance and it's genuinely hard to reduce to a number, because the right vent area depends on bird count, coop volume, climate and how wet the litter is. But the consequence is that ventilation gets designed by accident.
So do three practical things with any plan you use. Put the vents high, above roost height, so moist air leaves without blowing across the birds. Put them on more than one side, because a single window is a window and not a cross-flow. And make at least some of them adjustable, since the opening you want in August is not the opening you want in January.
If a plan gives you one small fixed window, that's the field to change before you build, not after.
Plans for a coop that moves
A moveable plan needs three numbers a static plan doesn't: finished weight, wheel diameter and position, and ground clearance. Miss any one and you'll build something that technically has wheels and practically never moves.
Finished weight is the one that decides everything. A plan can't give you an exact figure — timber varies — but it can give you a lumber schedule you can total, and a good one tells you the expected range and the number of people needed. For reference, of the 20 commercial coops we sell, not one states an assembled weight, so the plan world is not uniquely bad here; the entire category ignores it.
Wheel diameter and position decide effort. Wheels go at one end so the other end lifts, and bigger wheels ride over more. Only two of the coops we sell state a wheel diameter; both are 3.9 inches, which suits short grass and level ground.
Ground clearance decides whether the frame drags. One listing in 20 states a figure — 7.5 inches. If your ground is anything but a bowling green, that number matters more than the paint colour.
The fourth thing a tractor plan should state, and almost never does, is whether the base is open. That's the difference between a chicken tractor and a coop on wheels, and we've written the long version in what is a chicken tractor.
What we'd change on almost every plan we've read
Three things, in order of how much regret they save.
Make the pop-hole bigger and square-ish. Plans that state one at all tend to draw something tall and narrow. Of the four coops in our catalogue that publish a door opening, the openings run from 11 × 12.25 inches up to 14 × 23 inches — a wide spread for the same job. A generous, roughly square opening is easier for birds and vastly easier if you ever fit an automatic door.
Double the vent area and make half of it closable. See above. Nobody has ever regretted a coop that was slightly too airy in January; plenty of people have scrubbed a damp one.
Add a full-width access panel you can reach the whole floor through. Almost every plan optimises for the bird and forgets the person holding the scraper. One listing in 20 tells you how long the thing takes to put together — about 40 minutes with two adults — and none of them tell you how long it takes to clean, which is the number you'll live with every week.
Here's our stance, and it costs us a sale to say it. If you want a specific size, own a saw and enjoy the work, build — a plan-built coop beats a bought one at the same price nearly every time, because you're not paying for a shipping carton. If you want a coop in your yard this month with the cutting already done, buy one and spend the weekend on something else. The failure case we see most often is the half-built coop in the garage in October, and it starts with choosing a plan that was too ambitious for the tools available.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a good chicken coop?
Dry litter, moving air, enough floor area for the flock, a roost the birds can reach safely, and access that lets you clean it without crawling. Published guidance suggests 3 to 4 square feet of coop floor per standard hen plus 8 to 10 square feet of run, about six inches of roost per bird, and one nest box per four or five hens. Everything else — style, colour, roofline — is preference.
How to design a chicken coop?
Start with the flock size, multiply out the floor and run areas, then draw the box around those numbers. Fix the roost height and nest-box positions before the walls, because they set the interior height. Add vents high and on at least two sides, size the pop-hole generously, and only then decide what it looks like. Designing the shape first and fitting the birds in afterwards is the usual mistake.
Does a chicken coop need windows?
It needs ventilation; windows are one way to provide it. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that windows or vents on one side usually provide plenty of ventilation for a small coop. Glazed windows add light and let you check on the birds without opening up, but they also add heat in summer, so any window should either open or be paired with vents that do. Mesh the opening whatever you choose.
How to build a chicken coop roof?
Single slope is the simplest and the most forgiving: one plane, one set of cuts, and water goes one way. Give it enough pitch to shed rain properly, overhang the walls so runoff clears the structure, and leave a vented gap under the high edge for airflow above roost height. Fix the sheathing before the covering, and cover from the low edge upwards so each layer overlaps the one below.
